Pre-Winter Boiler Replacement in Bishop's Stortford
Fault caught during an overdue service, new boiler fitted within two days
The Brief
A family in Bishop's Stortford called Thomas on a Wednesday morning in late November. Their gas combi boiler was still running, just about, but the pressure kept dropping and the radiators weren't reaching proper temperature. Christmas was three weeks away, family were due to arrive, and they wanted the boiler looked at before the worst possible time of year for a heating failure.
What Thomas Found
Thomas visited the same afternoon. The boiler was around twelve years old and hadn't been serviced in the six years since the family had moved in. The assumption had been that because it was working, it was fine. When Thomas opened the unit and ran through a proper service inspection, he found a small crack in the heat exchanger. It wasn't catastrophic yet, but it was leaking internally and losing pressure as a result. Left another month, particularly through December when the boiler would be under its hardest load of the year, it would almost certainly have failed.
The Options
Thomas laid out the options in plain terms. A heat exchanger replacement was technically possible, but on a twelve-year-old boiler with no service history, the cost of the part and the labour would be most of the way to the price of a new unit. A new boiler would come with a manufacturer warranty, run more efficiently, and not have a decade of unserviced wear already accumulated. The family talked it through and decided to go ahead with a replacement.
The Installation
Thomas returned two days later with the new boiler and completed the installation in a single day. The work included:
- Safe removal of the old boiler: disconnected, drained and taken away for disposal.
- New unit supply and fit: modern high-efficiency combi sized for the property's existing hot water and heating demand.
- Pipework adjustments: existing pipework checked and cleaned, minor alterations made for the new inlet positions.
- Commissioning and testing: filled, pressurised and run through full commissioning. All controls, thermostats and safety devices verified.
- Handover: walked the family through the controls, showed them how to check the pressure, and registered the manufacturer warranty on their behalf.
The Result
The family had heating and hot water throughout Christmas. That sounds like the bare minimum, but for a significant number of households every winter, Christmas falls during an unexpected breakdown because the boiler hasn't been properly looked at in years. The crack in the heat exchanger would not have shown up as a visible problem until it failed completely. A service found it in time for a planned, orderly replacement rather than an emergency call-out competing against every other broken boiler in Essex.
Job Duration: One afternoon for assessment, then a single day on site for the full installation.
